Reborn Doll?? ....... What's That??
Here is a quick overview of Reborning.
Simply – a reborn doll is a reworked production doll or kit. It will be vinyl / plastic / silicone or combination of these materials.
After preparation of the doll / kit, the reborn artist’s work begins.
Here is a description of the steps we apply to our reborn dolls.
1 - a thorough washing of all parts to remove any residues
2 - with Genesis heat set paints we set to work to build layer by layer the veins, undertones, complexion, blush tones, creases, marks, lashes, nails, tips and facial features to present a realistic, lifelike appearance to the doll.
Marks can include milk pimples, stork bites, mottles, scratches.
Each doll is uniquely finished – similar can be reproduced but each is truly a one of a kind.
For this reason, if you see one you like you may need to act quickly if you want it, for even the same artist will not repeat the same doll.
3 - Attention is then given to features that might benefit from a “wet look”
4 - Eyes are an important addition too and can range from economical plastic “dolly” eyes through acrylics up to top quality,
expensive glass eyes. The choice made here must be reflected in the final price of a doll.
We like to have the eyes in before the hair as eye colour and complexion may not “work” with all hair colours.
5 - Hair rooting - now this ….. this takes forever.
Each individual hair or a few at a time are pushed through the head of the doll with a felting needle.
Each hair needs to be rooted at an appropriate angle for the hair to lay and appear natural when complete.
Many fibres can be used for this however we choose Angora Mohair, English Leicester or human hair.
The size of the needles impacts upon the finish – simply the finer the needle you can use the more natural the hair root appears.
Once satisfied with the amount of hair, age appropriate, the hair is waterproof sealed from the inside.
6 - Assembly is then a matter of weighting and if necessary, sealing limbs.
The body and head also need attention to weight distribution for realism.
Weighting materials vary from soft fibre fill, plastic beads, glass beads and rarely, kiln dried silica.
7 - Presentation – outfits and accessories to suit / make each individual little character are then matched with the doll.
